Most Ultimate Hoops players go their entire career without setting a league record. For example, Ryan Jansen, a first-ballot Hall of Famer, has played in 894 games, 90 more than anyone else in all of UH, and he has no single-game records in any of the leagues he’s played in.

Some players can set records right away, and that’s the case for Greg Kates, as he set a new Green Valley Rec League record in his fifth career Ultimate Hoops game.

Kates grabbed a single-game league record 30 rebounds in an 87-68 win for Lights Out. Kates was dominant on both ends of the floor, as he had 17 defensive rebounds and 13 on the offensive end. This shatters Kates’ previous career-high of 10 rebounds.

A big reason why Kates was able to get the new record was due to the poor shooting in last night’s game. The Rudedogs shot 26-86 (30%) and Lights Out shot 36-87 (41%) from the field, which combines for 111 missed shots (and that goes up to 118 when you add in the seven missed free throws).

While the 30 rebounds are certainly the headline form this performance, Kates added 12 points on 6-11 shooting and seven blocks.

Kates has now set a high bar for himself and the rest of the Green Valley Rec League to surpass. He may never set another league record for the rest of his Ultimate Hoops career, but he can say he’s done it, which is something most UH players can’t.
