Shannon Haney helps Trifecta set a new Champions league record

“We didn’t play to our full potential,” Shannon Haney said after Trifecta defeated Another One 87-71 last night in the Champions Open League.

When Haney said that after the game, he was talking about Trifecta as a whole, as they certainly didn’t play their best, shooting 0-6 from deep and turning the ball over 14 times. I can’t imagine Haney was disappointed with his own performance. He put up 33 points on 12-24 shooting, adding 15 rebounds and five blocks. The most impressive stat of his performance is that he had 10 offensive rebounds, a big reason why Trifecta was able to out-rebound Another One 48 to 30.

Grabbing 10 offensive rebounds may seem like a big accomplishment, but it’s quite routine for Haney. In his nine career UH games, Haney has gotten at least 10 offensive boards four separate times, with 12 being his career high. This has all added up to a career average of 6.9 offensive boards a game, almost half of his 15 total rebounds per game.

While his 10 offensive boards aren’t a league record, or even a career high, Trifecta did set a league record last night. The 48 total rebounds are eight short of the league record, but the 12 blocks are a new league record. Haney had five of them, while Terry Calhoun had four and Jeffery Boykin had three.

Trifecta won by 16 and set a league record last night but still didn’t play to their full potential. The rest of Champions might be in trouble.
