#StayingHome with Derek Hamner

While we all would prefer to catch up in person at a league night, that’s not a possibility right now. With all Life Times closed at the moment, we want to reach out to players to see how they’re passing the time without basketball.

UH Minnesota’s Derek Hamner took some time to let us know what he’s been doing at home during this down time.

1. What do you miss most about normal life?

I miss being able to get out and workout at Life Time, from shooting around, pickup games during the week/weekend, and the normal classes I would take. Also just being able to go to the mall to walk around and shop.

2. Do you have a favorite basketball game to rewatch?

I am a Steph Curry and Kobe Bryant fan, so I would typically watch highlights of their championship runs, or their workout videos for me to learn some different things to work on. I love watching the 2014-19 Finals movie for the Golden State Warriors. But by far, my favorite basketball movie is Spike Lee's "Kobe Doin Work"

3. Do you have any at-home workouts or drills you’ve been doing?

Recently I have joined a group of other MN hoopers in a chat that we all talk about workouts that we are all committed to doing daily. I also shoot and dribble around my apartment while watching YouTube or TV.

4. Best TV show/movie/book you’ve watched/read during this time?

The best TV show I've watched so far is called "Q Ball", which is based in the San Quentin prison where they have a basketball team. The convicts are sponsored by the Golden State Warriors and play regular season games and their final game is against the coaching staff of the Warriors. One convict got a tryout with the Santa Cruz Warriors once he was released.

5. Are there any silver linings to staying at home?

The silver lining I see is being able to spend more time with God and my wife without all the different needs to run around town all day long. Plus I can rest and get my body ready to go back to playing 3-5 nights a week.
