Chris Maher becomes the second player in UH history to surpass 5,000 rebounds

Chris Maher played in his first Ultimate Hoops game in the Summer of 2010, where he grabbed eight rebounds in a 72-61 win for the Hornets. That would end up being a blueprint for his UH career, as he’s averaged 7.9 rebounds over the course of 638 games.

That has translated into 5,012 career rebounds, making him the second player to ever surpass 5,000 rebounds in Ultimate Hoops history. He was sitting on 4,998 rebounds heading into last night’s game in Fridley, and he ended up getting 14 rebounds to comfortably get past 5,000 for his career.

Unfortunately for Maher, this milestone came in a losing effort, as his double-double of 31 points and 14 boards was not enough against FOB Five, as The Originals fell 84-69.

The only player ahead of Maher on the all-time rebounding leaderboard is Hall of Famer Mike Mastro, who currently sits at 6,272 rebounds. Maher is unlikely to catch Mastro, but he can continue to separate himself from everyone else currently chasing 5,000 boards. If Maher keeps his current pace of 7.9 rebounds per game, he’ll get to 6,000 rebounds in 125 games.

One thing Maher can do that Mastro has already done is be inducted into the UH Hall of Fame. Maher has been nominated the past two years and will likely be nominated once again in 2020. His consistency on the court is his main case for the Hall of Fame, and getting past 5,000 rebounds is a perfect example of that.
