Minnesota Rec is well known for hard-nosed defense and competitiveness, which aligns with the blue-collar mentality that comes along with living in the bitter cold for six months out of the year.

Sometimes offensive talent takes over though, and that was the case in the absurdly high-scoring 159-130 win for The Originals over Air Ballers in the Fridley Rec-Plus League last night.

The 159 points scored by The Originals is a new single-game team scoring record in the Fridley Rec-Plus League, which converted into the rec-plus format in the Winter of 2018. They also tied a rec-plus record by racking up 41 assists, which matched them with…The Originals…as they also pulled that off in a 136-89 win against Tre-Wayy…six weeks ago. The Originals also had 67 rebounds against Tre-Wayy in that blowout win, which is a single-game team record; so The Originals are very familiar with setting record this season.

Every player on The Originals had at least four assists last night, and that was led by Max Wessel with 11.

When you look through the box score from last night’s game, it’s easy to see how 289 points were scored. Both teams shot 47% or better from the field, as they combined to shoot 113-219. The 219 shot attempts in a 44 minute game means there was an average of 4.97 shots per minute. There were also only two fouls committed and four free-throws attempted, leading to very few stoppages of play.

Both teams shot a plethora of 3s, as 67% of The Originals’ shots were 3s, while 53% of Air Ballers’ shots were 3s. They combined to shoot 60-131 from beyond the arc (46%), with The Originals making 38 of them.

From an individual level for The Originals, all six of their players scored at least 16 points and shot 40% or better from the field. The scoring effort was led by Josh Hoyle, who scored a game-high 37 points on 13-19 shooting from the field, 8-10 from deep and 3-3 from the free-throw line. That gives him shooting percentage splits of 68/80/100 in the game, and improves his season averages to 53/43/82.

The 159-point performance puts The Originals’ season average to 98.3 points per game, which is the highest in the league by 8.4 points. This type of shooting performance won’t continue into the playoffs, but their potent offense will prove to be a hard out for anyone.
